We had this problem. Several time as well. We finally went to Home Depot, got a piece of screen frame, mounted it to the screen about 24 inches off the bottom, repaired the screen to THAT section of frame, THEN put a light-weight board material across that bottom 24 inches section ANNNNNND put an actual doggie door in it.

My old dog did the same thing! We reinforced the bottom of the screen door with a metal screen… and he quickly realized he could use his paw in the metal screen to pull the door open, since it was very lightweight. He taught the cat as well, though she pretends she doesn’t know if we’re around to open it for her!
