You are right…this dog is not normal! But he is very happy, loved, and well taken care of. I’m his Mommy and he has a very good home and I’m pretty certain he thinks he is the most handsome boy in the world.

What a beautiful boy you have! He looks a lot like my baby- who is also a total bed hog and lays almost the same way!! He even has the same dalmation spots in his underbelly! We also get a lot of people commenting on how skinny he is; frequently people jump to judgement before considering breed and vet recommendations all come in to play when deciding a healthy diet for a dog. It is obvious this hansome guy is well loved.

He is clearly loved. Thank you for loving your dog. Some people are just insensitive. At least I hope these are not owners of doggy friends that are left tied up outside all the time! You friend has a big warm bed, that, although he loves you, he would rather have all to himself!!! How funny!

Someone once came up to me and said (of my greyhound), “I’d never have a dog like that; his face looks just like a rat’s.” I said, “I’m pretty sure he doesn’t think your face is anything to write home about.” This person got all offended. Excuse me? Who threw the first insult?

I know that dog. While he may not be normal the vet says he is perfectly healthy. I also happen to be a dog trainer and can say without a doubt he is both spoiled and happy

Heartless fool! The dog’s not unhappy, and is clearly very well loved. What’s your problem? People have disfigurements and live happy lives, same can be said for animals.

Natasha!!! YOU NAILED IT!!! We are all different in some way. We are not perfect beings and neither are our beloved pets… either by birth or because of some cruel act of abuse. And KUDOS to those that love the un”perfect” looking pet!!!! Damn to those that are ignorant!!! Love Picasso and his cute little face!!! Someone freaked out on me because my dog looked too skinny!!! Healthy, happy, and very very very very loved and spoiled!!!

He looks perfectly healthy to me: nice shiny coat and no signs of malnutrition. Is it because you can see his ribs? That’s just silly: he’s a breed that’s naturally slender. Some breeds are just like that. I had a weimaraner for fourteen years, and she was always skinny, but perfectly healthy. Same deal with greyhounds. Don’t assume that a dog is unhappy or being neglected based on that!

He looks like a pointer breed – they are usually on the slimmer side. I’m sure that if he gets to hop into bed with the parents he’s getting all the food he wants.

That’s a classic ‘paint me like on of your French girls’ look if ever I saw one. Is there a reason for his funny face or is it just a quirk of his?

Looks like a wry nose, a birth defect that horses can have. I’m not sure if dogs can have the same thing. Weight looks fine. It’s healthier to be a bit thinner than fat and overfed like most dogs.

    Reply
  4. Leigh

Besides the fact that some breeds are just thinner looking than others, he may have some trouble eating as much with that little nose of his. I’m sure if he was standing up he would look the picture of healthy weight. He looks like he is well cared for.

With those long limbs he might even be part greyhound, and even at a normal weight they’re pretty skinny. It’s hard to keep weight on them until they’re older/adopted for a long while. What a face!

If his mom allows him in her bed and takes pics of him for this site, I am sure he is loved and cared for in the most perfect way. It’s the dogs that are ignored and left alone that we should be worried about.

I have a hound mix, 14 now with the same skinny thing going on. She eats as much as she wants but she just doesn’t seem to put on any sub-cutaneous fat. Picasso looks a normal weight for his breed/mix. The twisted muzzle is not the worst I’ve ever seen, I suspect he eats just fine.

It’s a messy process, but he has no trouble eating, drinking, or playing. His favorite toy right now is a stuffed monkey, but he also likes to hoard bones and protect them from his brothers.

Just curious how the dog’s snout got displaced like that. From birth? Rescued like that? If he is a rescue bless you for it!

    Reply
  14. Liza

He is a rescue. I just posted Picasso’s story on DogShaming’s Facebook, because I was sad to see that many people thought there is something wrong with him. His face is crooked from a birth defect. Dogs sometimes get stuck in the birth canal and their heads are so soft that they get disfigured. They usually pass due to an inability to nurse, or are immediately euthanized, but not my special boy. Aside from his funny face there is nothing wrong with him, he is not actually disabled or in any pain. In fact he’s kind of a stinker. 🙂

I submitted a picture of my dog Picasso for shaming because I wanted other dog-lovers to see the face that stole my heart. I was thrilled when I saw that he was on the site then horrified to find that people thought he was ill, and neglected. Picasso’s good looks are due to a birth defect. Aside from making him extra handsome there is nothing wrong with him. He is not in any pain, although sometimes he IS a pain, and does not have any trouble eating or drinking…even if it is a sloppy ordeal. I adopted Picasso, a now 3 year old coonhound from a rescue a year and half ago as a companion for my rescued Chihuahua mix, Big Ears Smalls who has the unfortunate disability of only being able to hold up one ear.. They were instant buddies and are now a bonded pair. They have a very good life, they lay on the couch and sleep in the bed. They are walked everyday and have a great big yard to play in. They are both on the thinner side as they are very active and are fed a grain-free diet which tends to lend itself to a lower body weight. My vet assures me that they are both very healthy, but due to the overwhelming number of obese dogs our perspective is skewed. Three days ago, we adopted a third dog, a senior wolfhound mix named Mike who came from the same rescue as Picasso. All members of our family, both human and K9 are thrilled. In the future, please assume that if someone takes the time to submit their dog for shaming that they are also taking the time to take proper care of their pet.

Picasso’s my favourite! My dog leaves her tongue hanging out all the time too… She’s a greyhound, so I think the flopping tongue must be a long-snounted trait. I was hoping Picasso was a greyhound too, but he’s still lovely, despite the fact that he isn’t… 😉

Oh why yes! I’m sure this dog is horribly abused and his mom just thought it would be a stitch to show her abused baby on this website! Some people who post on here should just stay off the internet and remain in the fetal position. Your baby is beautiful and obviously well cared for, but mostly loved.

Even my cocker spaniel mix (rescue!), where cocker spaniels tend towards being overweight, can barely keep any fat on him. He eats enough food to sustain an 80-lb dog, and yet he’s finally up to a healthy 40 lbs, after months of adding straight veg oil to his food because otherwise he just would. not. gain. weight. He’s even old! And it’s not even a completely grain-free diet! (His severe allergies means his food options are extremely limited, and he’s done the best on Wellness Lamb Salmon Barley.) …Some dogs, like some humans, will just always be super skinny!

…Also I LOVE LOVE LOVE that your dog with the silly face is named Picasso! PERFECT!!!!!!!!!! %-)

Thanks for sharing! All three of our Dachshunds are rescues and we keep them on the thinner side. Back problems plague this breed and weight only makes it worst. Ours are also fed an organic grain ree diet. Grain just bloats the dogs, as it does in humans. (Wheat) Thanks again for sharing and for adopting rescue dogs!

I thought he was very intelligently named… Picasso. Look up his paintings sometime people it would explain a lot. People who adopt less adoptable animals save a life… and very importantly the line often blurs between who saves who. I am a sucker for spotted dogs. Mine rules the roost so hard that he has his own Full sized bed, and his own room…. not a cage. Dog Bless you!
