We just moved to a new house this week and all of the sudden our chihuahua is afraid to walk on the tile and hardwood… And she has to cross them to get to the doggie door.

Lol….we have the same problem. I’m sure people must think we’re nuts when they come over and see rugs all over the place.

It’s okay Sam. Our hardwood floors are covered with a rug path for our Gracey 🙂

I feel for you! We had a 185 lb. bloodhound that wouldn’t cross uncarpeted floors or climb indoor steps, so he never got to sleep with us. We didn’t have to worry about him getting into things in the kitchen though!

Wow. I thought I was the only person in the world with a dog with this problem. I have a 12 year old miniature schnauzer who in her first home, the tile was never an issue. However, when I put wood in the bedrooms, she wouldn’t budge. Now I live in a home with wood floors throughout downstairs and she hates it. I have a huge area rug and she musters up her braveness to go from area to area throughout the day, but I’m sure she’s not happy about it. 😉

My dad’s first black lab did the same thing — Tiggy was terrified to set paw on the “scary floor” (aka the granite by the BACK door). She’s just sit there and cry until you carried all 57 lbs of her to the safe, non-scary carpet.

However, Tiggy was perfectly happy to walk on the IDENTICAL granite by the FRONT door. Literally identical — installed the very same day as the “scary floor”.

our dog’s gotten over his fear of wood flooring (of all kinds really) and tile. (we think that at some point he lived with someone who’d beat him if he came inside, Whatever happened he seems to be afraid of big sticks and coming inside buildings too) But he still refuses to do his business on them, which is a good thing I guess

We installed wood floors in kitchen, tore out icky carpet. For our dogs’ safety and sanity, we purchased runner carpet from Lowes– cut it to length we needed.

your dogs are probably older an are having problems with traction on the tiles, can also mean hip problems in some dogs get it checked out!

My old dog Sheba was afraid of tile floors. Why? Because the vet’s office had tile floors, so if you have tile floors, you must be a veterinarian!

I bought some ‘grippy socks’ for our little Bootsy and now he has traction and doesn’t mind the hardwood floors. He’ll actually hold his paws out for me to put them on for him!!

Years ago, I had a dog who had no problem with the floors (vinyl, tile, and carpet) in my house, but at my mother-in-law’s, he wouldn’t walk in the area rug, only the tiles surrounding it, and at my mother’s house, he would refuse to walk on the vinyl floor (he would crawl if we offered him treats from the other side), but he had no problem with the carpets.

My collie pound poochie mix Banjo has the same problem with the white tile. If the rug’s not there, he won’t come into the house.

We have a 6 months old yellow lab who developed a fear of the tile about 2 months ago now. He used to run acrossed it all the time, he is never unsupervised so we know he has not slipped. Hd used to love going to the store too. Now is afraid of all floors that are not carpet. We put down runners and that works most of the time, but has days where even that is scary. I am at my wits end with this puppy, help.
