Always get a dog checked for hypothyroidism before reducing food intake for weight loss.

Poor Puppy, My Tracy Looks the same way and she tells me that god loves them no matter how big they are. I am not convinced when she says she has big bones, since she is the same breed as your baby.

Also, there are good dog foods geared to low-calorie, where the dog would have more volume, but fewer calories, so wouldn’t feed “deprived”.

My boy was so round that pet store employee asked when is she due. Diet time also game time, I put his food in treat ball so have to keep pushing ball around house to get food worked well with mine. He went from 14lbs down to 8lbs now.

A cup a day is a lot.. half a cup is probably more than enough. Poor joints

My dogs love carrots and frozen green beans. As for the dog food, ration it out through the day. Good luck! In her defense, it was a long hard winter. 🙂

I do chihuahua rescue and fat dogs are a big problem for us. The best way to get your dog to lose weight is to use a measuring cup. I’m going to guess that this darling little butterball needs more like 1/4 to 1/3 cup of food twice a day. Treats have way more calories than people think. Great treats are green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cantaloupe, watermelon, apple – lots of things that dogs like but won’t put the weight on them.

Good for you for caring enough to ‘torture’ your dog with a diet =) veggies are a good way to make them feel full while saving calories. One of my two dogs is on a diet right now, too.

YOu know, my chihuahuas are 7 or 8 lbs a piece and they get 1/3 of a cup of dog food a day, plus 1 or 2 treats. They don’t take much, and treats do count, even rawhides count. The rule of thumb is 24 calories per pound of dog for normal. 18 calories per pound for seniors or to lose weight, 36 calories per pound for active, pregnant, or underweight.
