My pekepoo used to do this until I started leaving food down all the time. They get irritated stomachs but if they eat a bit of food, it helps keep them from throwing up. My little one is now 11 1/2 years old and hasn’t had any issues since I started the feeding on demand.

I found this with my previous maltese. AND the maltese I have now… It took me 8 years to figure it out with my first malt. I thought it was some sort of after effect of the Parvo she had when we adopted her (She was a rescue). I started to leave food out for her all the time because I noticed she only ate when she was hungry anyway – she wasn’t a scoffer. Her vomiting completely stopped. The maltese Luna I have now is exactly the same. She’ll vomit if her bowl is empty for too long…

This winter my girl started throwing up in the middle of the night too – just vomiting up bile, but it got so bad that the bile then had blood in it. She was diagnosed with an ulcer probably due to high acid production in her tummy. All tests came back normal, good kidney, liver, pancreas function and no crazy levels on anything. All I can do is put her on pepcid and try to keep some food in her belly to keep it from getting too empty and irritating the lining of her stomach!
I hope your little one feels better soon and that the $500 is the last of what you spend at the vet for a while!

Going to the vet was a good call; however, $500 to diagnose gas seems a little steep. So glad it wasn’t anything serious — adorable pup!
